ABIM is beginning development of a Longitudinal Knowledge Assessment (LKA®) in clinical cardiac electrophysiology (CCEP). The launch date is still being determined.
Introduced in 2022, the LKA is currently available in 17 specialties, and more than 85,000 certificates are being maintained through it. According to a new survey published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, 73% of general internists participating in the LKA reported that it had led to changes or intended changes to patient care.
“Many physicians say they appreciate the convenience and flexibility of the LKA, as well as the immediate feedback they receive that can support learning,” said Andrea M. Russo, MD, Chair of the ABIM Cardiovascular Board. “It’s important that assessments are informed by physicians and meet their needs. Creating an LKA in CCEP provides another option for clinical cardiac electrophysiologists to demonstrate to their peers and patients that they are keeping their knowledge current.”
ABIM would like to thank the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) for supporting an additional pathway for their U.S. physician members to maintain their certification.
Once the LKA launches in CCEP, physicians maintaining certification in that discipline will have three assessment options:
- The CCEP LKA
- The traditional, 10-year MOC exam
- The ACC/ABIM Collaborative Maintenance Pathway (CMP)
As with other cardiovascular disciplines that have both an LKA and a CMP assessment option, diplomates will be able to switch to the CCEP LKA when it becomes available. More information will be shared once ABIM determines the launch date.
Physicians certified in CCEP are encouraged to help write items or review exam content for the new LKA to ensure questions are relevant to what is seen in practice. Consider applying to join the Item-Writing Task Force or the Approval Committee.
