Important Information on References for Sleep Medicine Exams

November 3, 2023  |  Posted by ABIM  |  Announcements

The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) believes that staying up to date in medical knowledge is a core aspect of earning and maintaining board certification. The questions on the initial certification exam, the traditional 10-year Maintenance of Certification exam and the Longitudinal Knowledge Assessment will therefore refer to the most recently published clinical texts.

Beginning January 1, 2024, all Sleep Medicine assessment questions will use the updated criteria and evidence presented in the following publications by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM):

  • The AASM Manual for the Scoring of Sleep and Associated Events: Rules, Terminology and Technical Specifications, Version 3 (released February 2023).
  • The International Classification of Sleep Disorders – Third Edition, Text Revision (ICSD-3-TR, released June 2023).

The Examinees are expected to refer to these resources, when appropriate, in answering exam questions.

For the November 21, 2023, Sleep Medicine initial certification and MOC exams, questions will use the updated AASM Scoring Manual Version 3 and the 2014 ICSD-3 (not the text revision referred to above).
