ABIM’s Exam Experience Team Works to Accommodate Individuals with All Disabilities
Each year ABIM fields hundreds of calls and emails from individuals who ask for accommodations for a variety of disabilities. Our Exam Experience team works hard to make sure every doctor who sits for an exam or works through questions on the new Longitudinal Knowledge Assessment (LKA) has what they need to be successful and that there is equity for all who take an ABIM assessment. Special accommodations based on a disability require certain criteria to be met.
It is ABIM’s policy to comply with Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) because our goal is to help physicians who need accommodations to succeed. This can mean providing comfort aids or a modified break schedule to take a 10-year exam, or finding a way to help an individual who has an invisible disability by providing additional time for questions.
The ABIM team is also available to provide additional support for nursing and pregnant women.
“If you need an accommodation, reach out early, before the deadline passes,” said Aleisha Collier, Exam Accommodations Manager. “When you contact us, you will reach a person who will walk you through the process and answer any questions you have.”
Aleisha stressed that discretion is a high priority throughout the process and notes that assessment accommodations are confidential.
“Approved accommodations are not listed on the physician’s score report, the website or any public document that notes there was an accommodation made,” she said. “We’re here to help work through whatever a physician might need.”
