ABIM Celebrates Pride Month: Resources & Events
The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and the ABIM Foundation join many of our colleagues in the internal medicine community in condemning any discrimination based on a person’s sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or other characteristics.
ABIM has created a list of resources for physicians to help them learn how to better serve transgender patients, and many of our society partners have developed clinical practice guidelines and tips for improving communication with different members of patient communities. Here are just a few:

ABIM also had the opportunity to speak to several influential voices to highlight LGBTQ+ issues in healthcare:
As part of a continued series highlighting “Voices that Transform,” ABIM had the opportunity to speak to Jennifer Aldrich, MD, who identifies gaps in healthcare that impact the LGBTQ+ community.
“Traditionally, the medical system and the medical education system provided no information about trans health and gender-affirming care, and many of us who are practicing either learned from each other or just by seeking out information independently. Until recently, and it depends on the curriculum, little to nothing was taught about transgender health. I learned nothing about transgender health when I was a medical student, a resident or a fellow. So, the first thing that we can do as a profession is to make sure that we are teaching that gender-affirming care is the best care that we can provide, and I don’t mean just hormones and surgeries, I mean being affirming of who somebody is.”

Kyle Christiason, MD, the Medical Director for Unity Point Accountable Care, will discuss the development of the Prairie Parkway LGBTQ clinic and share what he has learned about providing patient-centered care to the LGBTQ+ community he serves.
June 27, 2022 | 1pm ET – ABIM Pride Panel
Join us for a panel discussion on the impact anti-LGBTQ+ legislation will have on clinicians, trainees and patients. The panel will also discuss the patient benefits of gender affirming care.
