Beginning in 2027, physicians certified in clinical cardiac electrophysiology (CCEP) will be able to choose the Longitudinal Knowledge Assessment (LKA®) to meet their Maintenance of Certification (MOC) assessment requirement. Enrollment opens December 1, 2026.
“We’ve heard from clinical cardiac electrophysiologists that they are seeking greater flexibility in how they meet their MOC assessment requirement,” said Andrea M. Russo, MD, FACC, FHRS, FAHA, Chair of the ABIM Cardiovascular Board and certified in CCEP. “In a rapidly evolving field like ours, the CCEP LKA supports physicians in keeping their knowledge current while promoting ongoing learning during the assessment process.”
Physicians certified in CCEP will have three options to meet their MOC assessment requirement starting in 2027:
- Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology LKA
- Traditional, 10-year MOC exam
- ACC/ABIM Collaborative Maintenance Pathway (CMP)
The LKA launched in 2022 in 12 specialties, and five more have been added since, including CCEP, bringing the total to 17. More than 92,000 certificates are now being maintained through the LKA.
ABIM thanks the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) for supporting this additional MOC assessment option for their U.S. physician members to maintain their certification.
As with other cardiovascular disciplines that have both an LKA and a CMP assessment option, physicians participating in the CMP may switch to the CCEP LKA in the year they are due for an assessment.
