Apply to the ABMS Visiting Scholars Program

The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) is committed to enhancing the quality of health care by certifying internists and subspecialists who demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for excellent patient care. To help advance this mission, ABIM and the ABIM Foundation are proud to sponsor the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Visiting Scholars Program™, a year-long, part-time research program that supports early career physicians and researchers as they strive to become leaders in their field.

Program participants will receive grants of $15,000 each to support research and travel expenses associated with program participation and research deliverables. The grant may be applied to an existing research project with a new scope or an original research project.

Applications to the ABMS Visiting Scholars Program are open now through June 23, 2025.

ABMS Visiting Scholars are selected based on the quality of their proposed research project. The Program begins in September 2025 and concludes at the ABMS Conference in September 2026.

Research Topics of Interest to ABIM/ABIM Foundation

• Investigating the evolution of medical professional values and assessment of professionalism in an evolving healthcare landscape
• Diagnostic and prognostic excellence through initial or continuing certification, within and across specialties
• Adoption of competency-based medical education and innovative assessments for initial or continuing certification
• Healthcare equity and diversity across the continuum of physician professional development
• Trainee and diplomate engagement in quality and safety activities, especially if related to improving physician well-being
• Intersection between a physician’s work, technology (e.g., electronic health records or artificial intelligence) and certification

Eligibility

• Early career physicians, junior faculty, fellows and residents, as well as individuals holding master’s or doctorate degrees in public health, health services research, educational evaluation and statistics, and public health policy and administration
• Veterans Affairs trainees and researchers
• Student visas are not available
