ABIM to Transition Sleep Medicine Certification Exam to Annual Administration

ABIM regularly monitors trends to track which areas physicians are specializing in, and uses this data to determine how often to offer assessments in a given discipline.

Because of increases in the number of physicians specializing in Sleep Medicine, ABIM will being offering an annual assessment in this discipline starting in 2023. This assessment was first offered in 2007 and has been historically offered every other year since its inception. Recent trends in the number of takers shows that ABIM can transition from a biennial to an annual assessment while still maintaining a valid, high quality assessment.

This is an important development for the Sleep Medicine field, as patients look to Board Certification as a marker of excellence and to know in whom they can entrust their care. Sleep Medicine has gone through tremendous growth in a short period of time since becoming a field unto itself in 2007.
